Here I will share my first WordCamp experience as attendee.
If you are going to attend the upcoming WordCamp in coming days, this experience might be fruitful to you. Especially new ones or beginners.
What is WordCamp?
In simple language, WordCamp is the event organized by WordPress in different cities for sharing knowledge, developing local community of WordPress, and most importantly contributing to the community of WordPress.
Where was my first WordCamp?
My first WordCamp was WordCamp Kathmandu 2017. I was very new to this city, the people and every member of WordPress Community. But there was always one man to help me. I will mention his name afterwards.
How it started…
I was first unknown about WordCamp. He told me about WordCamp and I was like “ok! let’s go this time”. He bought me a ticket for WordPress event for the first time in my life.
And finally WordCamp Kathmandu 2017 week arrived. Excitement was growing day by day. I didn’t know what’s going to happen next.
WordCamp Kathmandu 2017 was scheduled at 10:00 in the morning. But for registration I arrived 30 minutes earlier.
This was an international event so I thought many people will dress up formally. With this in mind, I changed my clothing. Not formal but kind of formal.
So, I reached the venue at 9:30. As I had never attended any international Conference, this was totally new experience for me. And how could I attend it?
I stayed in my home city for 18 years and I didn’t even hear a single WordPress Buzzing, no seminar, no meet-ups, nothing
So everything was great. I was getting more excited as I moved closer and closer to door of the venue. When I got inside the event venue, I was lost somewhere.
There were many people and I didn’t recognize any one of them. It was like ant in the group of elephants.
In the meantime…
I met the one who purchased me my first WordCamp ticket, @roshanbh. He took me to registration counter.
Surprisingly, after going there I found that we must wear WordCamp t-shirt during the event. So, this happens when you take your clothing too seriously sometimes. After that I wore T-shirt happily.
The sense of networking developed in me after watching others doing same thing. After that he introduced me to some of his colleagues.
I introduced myself to them and vice-versa. I was very new to wpreviews.org at that time. So, I couldn’t share more experience with them.
But one thing was common to every event, sponsors table. Many themes and plugins sponsors were their to expand their product. During this, they provided some fun to WordPress attendee.
Luckily, I came to know about Jetpack for the very first time. They also had representatives from WooCommerce.
I moved towards speakers’ hall…
I moved towards hall for opening ceremony of the one day event. The hall was decorated so beautifully that I was amazed. With delight I took my seat.
Community lead for WordCamp of that year was Mr. Yam B Chettri. I didn’t knew him (But at later WordCamp we became good friends). They spoke about the previous WordCamps that were organized all over the country.
After welcoming everyone in this event, opening ceremony was formally ended.
Speakers from different country around the world came to this WordCamp. I attended the sessions. What I knew was, speakers come to share their knowledge and with that knowledge they help WordPress community to succeed without any difficulty.
Building Networks with members of WordPress Community…
After that session, I went out. I thought this would be right time to introduce myself to other member of WordPress Community . I met top guys from the country who are doing well in this community. We introduced ourselves to each other.
Around 13:00, we had lunch. After that, I was in hall to gain the experience of one blogger, kat cristopher , who is recently working for WooCommerce. I was noob at that time. Every little gain was huge for me at that time.
Her early stage of blogging was similar to mine. Less clicks, less traffic, etc. But she never gave up. Above all her speech was inspiring. From 2 clicks a day to 14 clicks a week, she grew as blogger.
But due to echo, I couldn’t grab too much gold from goldmine.
Someone whispered after party…
I thought I would be home after 17:00. After some time, I heard someone whispering after party. I thought it was for sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and organizers. But it was not true. Finally, I went to after party after the event.
In the after party…
So I headed there with toptal co-ordinator of Nepal, Mr. Punit. I was excited about the after party. We sat in the round table and discussed about the present issues related to internet world. We had some beers and snacks. After hours of talk we departed from there.
This was the single day in the life of my 1st WordCamp.
